Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

After a long, hot summer, it’s hard to believe we are already talking about turning on our heaters.

Many of us were able to enjoy cracking the windows overnight this week, but with fall in the air, we know winter will be right on its heels.

While the temperature is still mild, we have developed this fall home maintenance checklist so homeowners can make sure their heating systems will keep their homes cozy and warm all winter long.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Exhaust Vents

If you have a gas furnace, look for signs of leakage around the vent.

If you see excess soot or smell a foul odor, there could be damage to the heat exchanger.

This could introduce carbon monoxide into your home.

Carbon monoxide exposure can be very dangerous for families, but examining exhaust vents can help homeowners catch the problem early.

Odors

When you first turn your heat on, it is not uncommon to smell a burning odor.

Dust gathers in your vents, heating coil, and heating strips after months of little to no use.

If the smell lingers more than a day or two, it is important to call an HVAC technician.

Proper Airflow

Whether it’s summer or winter, proper airflow is key to prolonging the life of your unit.

Keep supply and return vents open and free of debris, even in unused rooms.

As temperatures dip, make sure the space around your outdoor unit is free and clear of fallen leaves.

Continue to regularly change your filters.

Once a month is a standard; however, with your family and pets spending more time indoors, it is a good practice to check your vents every few weeks.

Restricted airflow can cause your unit to malfunction, and in the colder months, this can be dangerous for you and your family.

Open Curtains and Blinds On Sunny Days

We love cool autumn nights when we can open windows, keep our homes cool, and save on our energy bills.

However, even in winter, you can take some of the pressure off of your unit by letting the sun warm your home.

Open curtains and blinds, especially on those windows that receive direct sunlight for long periods of time during the day.

Make sure you close them when the sun goes down.

Your heating system works as hard or harder during winter as it does during summer.

Just like any mechanical system, your HVAC unit requires regular maintenance.
