How to Tell If It’s Time to Upgrade Your Air Conditioner (Before It Breaks in the Heat)

When it comes to your home’s comfort, your air conditioner is the real MVP during a Colorado summer.
But what happens when it starts falling short, running nonstop, cooling unevenly, or just not keeping up? Do you repair it… or is it time to replace it?
At First String Heating and Air, we know how tough it can be to make that call. A new system is a big investment, but continuing to sink money into an old, inefficient unit isn’t cheap either.
Here’s how to tell when it’s time to stop repairing and start planning for a replacement.
1. Multiple Repairs in the Last Few Years
A single repair isn’t necessarily a red flag, but if you’ve had two or more in the past couple of years (especially for things like the blower motor, compressor, or refrigerant leaks), it could be a sign your system is on its last legs.
Pro Tip: Add up what you’ve spent on repairs recently. If that total is close to 50% of what a new system would cost, it’s probably time to upgrade.
2. Your System Is Over 10–15 Years Old
Most air conditioners are built to last around 10–15 years. After that, performance starts to decline and efficiency drops, especially if maintenance hasn’t been consistent.
Even if it’s still technically running, an older system likely costs you more in energy bills and repair risks.
Bonus: New systems are significantly more energy-efficient. That means lower monthly bills and better cooling.
3. Your Home Feels Hot, Humid, or Uneven
Are some rooms freezing while others feel like a sauna? Does the AC run constantly but never really cool the house down?
These are all signs your current system isn’t sized properly or just can’t keep up anymore.
Comfort tip: A new system properly sized and professionally installed will cool your home more evenly and consistently, with less noise and less humidity.
4. Your Energy Bills Are Climbing
Older or struggling systems lose efficiency over time. Even if your AC isn’t making strange noises or breaking down, it might be working way harder than necessary, and you’re paying the price every month.
Compare your current summer bills to the same time a few years ago. A noticeable increase, even with similar usage, is a good clue that your system is aging out.
5. You’re Still Using R-22 Refrigerant (Freon)
If your AC was installed before 2010, there’s a good chance it uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced in the U.S. That means if your system leaks refrigerant, the repair will be expensive, if it’s even possible.
Solution: New AC units use R-410A, which is more efficient, more available, and environmentally friendly.
When Repair Does Make Sense
There are times when repair is still the better option, especially if your system is under 10 years old, has been well-maintained, and the issue is minor (like a capacitor, contactor, or clogged filter).
At First String Heating and Air, we’ll always give you an honest assessment. If we can fix it and keep it running strong, we will. If not, we’ll help you plan a smart replacement that fits your home and your budget.
